Job description
Advanced Reentry Technologies
Who We Are:
Inversion is an aerospace and defense company pioneering advanced reentry technology to enable next-generation capabilities from space. By combining high-performance materials, precision aerodynamics, and mission-driven autonomy, Inversion is transforming reentry into an operational capability for an entirely new class of missions.
The company’s highly maneuverable reentry spacecraft, Arc, is designed for rapid global cargo delivery, hypersonic testing, and other national security missions that require precise, controlled flight through the atmosphere. Arc creates an entirely new transportation domain, unlocking unprecedented speed and global reach.
Headquartered in Los Angeles, Inversion designs, manufactures, and integrates its spacecraft under one roof, enabling the company to move rapidly from concept to flight. The company is backed by leading investors including Y Combinator, Spark Capital, and Lockheed Martin Ventures, with customers across the U.S. government and commercial space industry.

In this role, you will lead the team responsible for the mechanical design, analysis, build support, integration, and qualification of Arc vehicle structures, mechanisms, and thermal protection systems. You will own delivery of Arc’s primary structures, associated mechanisms, and thermal protection systems (TPS).
Key Responsibilities

• Own the technical delivery of the Arc primary vehicle structures, associated mechanisms, and thermal protection system (TPS) manufacture build and integration.
• Partner with Production on manufacturability, tooling, inspection methods, process qualification, production capacity, and long-lead material planning.
• Coordinate and define mechanical interfaces, installation requirements, access provisions, load paths, and verification responsibilities.
• Oversee structural analysis and validation, including first-principles calculations, finite-element analysis, joint assessment, tolerance analysis, and test correlation.
• Lead planning and execution of structural, mechanical, and TPS development, qualification, acceptance, and vehicle-level testing.
• Support integrated vehicle builds, environmental testing, shipment, launch preparation, recovery operations, and post-flight hardware assessment as required.
• Drive root-cause investigations and corrective actions when necessary, including build non-conformances, test anomalies, and vehicle integration issues.
• Maintain configuration discipline across CAD, drawings, bills of materials, interface definitions, TPS process documentation, tooling, and verification evidence.
• Build and mentor a high-performing mechanical engineering team.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent technical experience.
• Typically 8+ years of technical experience developing aerospace vehicle structures, mechanisms, TPS, or similarly demanding hardware.
• Typically 2+ years of formal people-management experience, with a proven track record of leading high-performing engineering teams.
• Strong technical background in mechanical design, structural mechanics, load paths, joints, fasteners, materials, and manufacturing processes.
• Proven experience managing complex aerospace programs through design, environmental qualification, and flight operations.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to drive alignment across hardware, software, and production organizations.
• Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government Secret/ Top Secret security clearance.
Desired Qualifications
• Master's or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• Direct experience with hypersonic flight systems and/or reentry vehicle architectures.
